Elderly man admits sexually assaulting female family member

An elderly man admitted in Carbon County court on Tuesday that he sexually assaulted a young female member of his family.

Michael Steven Taschler, 81, of Covered Bridge Road, Kunkletown, pleaded guilty to one count each of endangering the welfare of a child and indecent assault.Taschler originally faced six counts of aggravated indecent assault, four counts of indecent assault, two counts each of criminal conspiracy, indecent assault, criminal conspiracy-aggravated indecent assault, and endangering the welfare of a child.All the other charges were dropped in a plea bargain with the district attorney's office.Judge Steven R. Serfass accepted the plea but deferred sentencing to a later date. Taschler must undergo a sexual offenders evaluation prior to sentencing.Taschler's daughter, Debbie Lynn Green, 39, of Avenue A, Palmerton, is also charged in connection with incident. She faces charges for endangering the welfare of a child and making terroristic threats.Green is scheduled to go on trial in September.The case came to light when the victim, now 16, reported the sexual contact with Taschler to the county Office of Children & Youth. That office notified state police at Lehighton.She said the sexual assaults began when she was nine years old and in the third grade.At a preliminary hearing the girl said she told her mother about what Taschler was doing to her. She said her mother told her not to tell anyone. She said after telling her mother she told a few close friends.She told investigating troopers that the assaults usually occurred at Taschler's residence.The incidents occurred over a period of January 2004 to December 2007.Taschler was originally charged with 18 counts but some were dropped at the district judge's level.
