Lehighton Rotary recognizes high school students

Lehighton Rotary Club recently hosted their annual Student Recognition Breakfast for Lehighton Area High School students.

According to Lehighton Rotary Club President Erica Heery, "This breakfast is a way that we can recognize our future leaders who are interested in making our community a better place to live, learn, work, and play through service to others."Earlier this year, Rotary sponsored an essay contest for high school juniors. In 250 to 300 words, students were asked to "describe your personal role model and how he or she has influenced you to make a difference in your community."Heery noted, "One of the main focuses of Rotary is literacy." On behalf of Lehighton Rotary Club, she recognized Rachel Schor for taking first place honors in the essay contest, Dylan Flexer second, and Logan Hine third. Schor then moved on to the district competition. District 7410 has 41 Rotary Clubs throughout ten counties."We are very proud that for the first time in many years, Lehighton Rotary Club will send two LAHS students to the RYLA Conference," said Heery.RYLA - Rotary Youth Leadership Awards - is a conference for high school students completing their sophomore year who have shown leadership potential in their home, school, and community. It is designed to introduce participants to thoughts and ideas to help strengthen and develop their leadership skills. The program provides an environment where participants may discuss and exchange their ideas with other students.Several LAHS students applied for the RYLA Conference Scholarships - each worth $300. On behalf of Lehighton Rotary Club, Heery recognized Nicole Schnell and Jaclyn Jordan as this year's scholarship recipients. They will attend the 2012 RYLA Conference at Keystone College in La Plume, PA. It begins Sunday, July 8 and concludes Thursday, July 12 with a graduation program.Heery thanked Lehighton Area School District Superintendent James Kraky; LAHS Principal Timothy Tkach; Assistant Principal Dan Repsher; Language Arts teacher Jennifer Kovatch; and Guidance Counselor Kathy Ebbert for their continued cooperation and support of Rotary programs in LASD.Rotary International is the world's first service club organization, with more than 1.2 million members in 34,000 clubs worldwide.
