Two men were sentenced to state prison terms on Monday in Carbon County court. The two were among several defendants who previously entered guilty pleas and were sentenced by Judge Steven R. Serfass.

Burglary countJoseph Michael Breuer, 22, of Cressona, Schuylkill County, was sentenced to serve 21 to 42 months in a state prison on a charge of criminal conspiracy-burglary.He was arrested by state police at Fern Ridge for his part in a break-in at a home along SR534 in Penn Forest Township that occurred on Nov. 20, 2008. The listed victim is John W. Williams. Taken in the entry was copper water piping valued at over $3,400. There was also damages done to the home.Troopers were able to trace the incident to Breuer by DNA. Two cigarettes found in the bathroom of the home were tested. Breuer's DNA was found on the cigarettes.Serfass also ordered Breuer to make restitution to the victim and insurance carrier in a total amount of $15,905.48. He was also ordered to get a mental health evaluation, supply a DNA sample as required by law and have no contact with the victim or his co-defendant in the case.Drug caseTaiwan C. West, 32, of Patterson, N.J., and formerly of Jim Thorpe, was sentenced to served 20 to 40 months in a state prison on a charge of possession of a controlled substance with intent to deliver.He was arrested by agents of the state Attorney General's office after a warrant was served on his home at the time along Second Street, in Lehighton, on Aug. 11, 2011. Found in the home were two bags of cocaine, which West admitted belonged to him.Serfass also ordered he supply a DNA sample, get a drug and alcohol (D&A) evaluation and have no contact with any of his co-defendants. He was given credit for 159 days spent in jail on the charge.Other casesOther defendants who were sentenced by Serfass included:Douglas J. Ahner, 48, of Jim Thorpe, was placed on probation for two years on a charge of possession with intent to deliver a controlled substance-marijuana. He was arrested on July 19, 2011, when state police served a search warrant on his residence after receiving a tip that he had marijuana plants growing on his property. Police found eight marijuana plants.Serfass ordered him to get for both a D&A and mental health evaluations, zero tolerance imposed on D&A use, supply a DNA sample, submit to urine screens twice a month, and render three hours of community service per month while on probation.Greg Hartman, 38, of Summit Hill, was sentenced to serve three to 12 months in the county prison on a charge of possession of drug paraphernalia. He was arrested on Dec. 22, 2010, at his residence when borough police responded to the home to assist sheriff deputies who were serving a warrant. While in the home police found marijuana plants. Hartman was not the person the sheriff deputies were looking for with the warrant.Serfass ordered Hartman to render three hours of community service for each month he is on parole and zero tolerance imposed on D&A use.Hartman will serve 30 days in jail and the remaining 60 in the county's Intermediate Punishment Program (IPP) with electronic monitoring. He was given credit for two days spent in jail on the charge.Shawn Michael Murphy, 31, of Lansford, was sentenced to serve 11 to 23 months in the county prison on a charge of criminal trespass. He was arrested by Nesquehoning police for his part in a burglary that occurred at property owned by David Susko. Taken was copper piping and various tools.Serfass ordered Murphy to supply a DNA sample and make total restitution of $2,439.04, which is half of the total due with the other half to be paid by his co-defendant. The prison term runs consecutive to a term Murphy is currently serving on a domestic relations violation.Tony Outlaw, 39, of Lehighton, was sentenced to serve three to 23 months in the county jail on one count of endangering the welfare of a child. He was arrested on Feb. 2, 2011, by Lehighton police after officers were summoned to the Lehighton hospital for a report of child abuse.Through an investigation police learned that Outlaw punched his five-year-old son in the back of his left leg fracturing the femur. He told police he did it because the child would not listen to his mother.Serfass also ordered Outlaw to get a mental health evaluation. He will begin the jail term on Jan. 21 at 9 a.m. and was given credit for 20 days spent in jail on the charge.Robert L. Smith, 61, of Lehighton, was placed on probation for six months on a charge of driving under the influence (DUI), his first offense. He was arrested on Feb. 26, 2010, along Fourth St, in Lehighton. Given a test, the result was .17 BAC.Serfass ordered him to pay a fine of $300 and get a D&A evaluation.Each defendant sentenced must also pay court costs, which average close to $1,000, and a $50 per month supervision fee while on probation or parole.
