After months of cleanup from last fall's flooding, the 24th annual Early Bird Sports Expo will be held Thursday through Sunday, Jan. 26-29, at the Bloomsburg Fairground. Show hours are Thursday, 4-9 p.m.; Friday, 10 a.m.-9 p.m.; Saturday, 10 a.m.-8 p.m. and Sunday, 10 a.m.-5 p.m.
Returning to the show this year is the 3D archery shoot, which will be conducted by Sutton's Archery of Benton, and there will be a special shoot for youth aged 12 and younger Sunday from 11 a.m. to noon. Targets for the shoot, which will be auctioned off Sunday at 4 p.m. to benefit flood victims in Bloomsburg, have been donated by Cabela's, and there will be a special contest Sunday at 11 a.m. for youth 12 years of age and younger.
There will be several seminars on spring gobbler hunting by members of the Col-Mont Gobblers Chapter of the National Wild Turkey Federation, including a calling seminar for youth hunters. Bob Erikson will present his "Wild Turkey 101" seminar, and Jason Michael will present a seminar on decoys for hunting spring gobblers.
Other seminars include "Firearms Family Safety and Protection" by Scott Letterman, "Trail Cameras" by Freddie McKnight and "Fishing Techniques and Secrets" by Lance Dunham. There will also be several fishing contests and a BB gun shoot for children.

Contestants are being sought for the Pennsylvania State Fly Tying Championship to be held Saturday, Feb. 11, during the Eastern Sports and Outdoor Show at the Pennsylvania Farm Show Complex, Harrisburg. As in years past, there are three categories and prizes being awarded for the top Youth, Amateur and Open entries.
Underwritten by the Eastern Sports and Outdoor Show, Cumberland Valley Trout Unlimited and Bass Pro Shops of Harrisburg, competition will begin at 11 a.m. in the Fishing Experience section. Contestants in each division will be awarded trophies for the top three finishers, the winning contestant in the Open Division will receive a minimum cash prize of $100 courtesy of the Cumberland Valley Chapter of Trout Unlimited and prizes for the Youth and Amateur Divisions are being provided by Bass Pro Shop.
Pre-registration is required for each division by Sunday, Jan. 15, and entrants are required to submit three flies along with their application to be pre-judged. The top five contestants in each category will then be selected to attend the final event at the sport show.
At the show, finalists will be required to tie three flies, two which they will know ahead of time and a third mystery fly. The contestants will be required to provide their own tools and materials.
Lehigh Valley Chapter Safari Club International will present a program by noted New York State fishing and hunting guide Bill Saiff III at its monthly dinner, Tuesday, Jan. 17, beginning at 6 p.m., at the Holiday Inn Conference Center, Fogelsville.
Saiff will present a program on waterfowl hunting, focusing on Canada geese and ducks. In addition to being a well-known hunting guide, he operates a fleet of fishing boats on Lake Ontario and a lodge at Henderson Harbor, he is also a respected outdoors writer and has made several hunting and fishing DVDs and television programs.

A scholarship has been created to honor the memory of Pennsylvania Game Commission wildlife conservation officer David Grove, who was killed last year in the line of duty, to benefit future wildlife management leaders and is being administered by the Conservation Officers of Pennsylvania Association and the Fraternal Order of Police, Conservation Police Officers Lodge 114.
To be eligible for the scholarship, an individual must be a full-time undergraduate student who is of, at least, junior academic standing, and majoring in Wildlife and Fisheries Science in the College of Agricultural Sciences, or to a student with a senior academic standing majoring in Wildlife Technology at Penn State University DuBois campus.
