Lehighton driver facing charges

A Lehighton driver is facing charges following an incident in Mahoning Township.

On May 13, at 520 p.m. township police observed a vehicle traveling on Route 443 with an expired inspection.While the officer was turning around to stop the vehicle it turned onto Troxell Road and accelerated to a high speed in excess of 70 mph.The vehicle failed to stop at a posted stop sign, and continued at excessive speed before stopping at the intersection of Troxell and Summer Mountain roads.The driver of the vehicle was identified as Jay Johnson, 31, of Lehighton.He has been charged with fleeing or attempting to elude police (misdemeanor), and summary offenses of operating without an inspection, careless driving, maximum speed limits, driving vehicle at safe speed, and stop signs and yield signs.A preliminary hearing is scheduled for July 1.
