Polk High School alumni project moves ahead

Norman Burger brought his list of Polk High School alumni to the Feb. 6 meeting of the Polk Township Historical Society.

He read the names of those for whom he had not found information. The list covers the time from 1912 to the '60s.Most of the names were recognized though the person may have not have been able to provide further information. In some cases a name that could lead to information was provided.Elmer Hessiam and Burger are working on a list of houses 100 years old or older. The next list to be worked on is of people from Polk Township who were in the Civil War. Activities are being planned on this theme since the 150th anniversary of the war is being celebrated.A meeting to discuss the 250th anniversary of Chestnuthill Township will be held within the next 30 days. Ross, Eldred and Polk townships will join the celebration because they were broken off from Chestnuthill.Burger will apply for grants from the hotel tax and casinos for the celebration. He talked to the Monroe County commissioners who told him to apply early for a county grant. The county grants are awarded in September.
