Would you like an opportunity to improve your health by exercising and losing weight while not only having a fun time but you will also be aiding a good cause in the process ?

If so, then what you're looking for would be the upcoming "Zumbathon" which will be held on March 4th at the Memorial Park Skating Rink in Jim Thorpe.

For those unfamiliar with a Zumbathon, the event will consist of two hours of Zumba.

Zumba is a fitness program done to international rhythms in easy-to-follow moves to create a one-of-a-kind fitness program.

All you need to participate are some sneakers, some comfortable clothing, a bottle of water, and an attitude.

In the mid-'90s Alberto "Beto" Perez created the Zumba experience after what many have called a true "happy accident."

As a fitness instructor in his native Colombia, Beto's life took an unexpected turn one day when he darted off to teach an aerobics class and forgot his traditional aerobics music.

He improvised using his own mix of salsa and merengue music from tapes he had in his backpack at the time.

The hosts for the Zumbathon are Sally Smith and Naomi Betancourt who will be aided by four additional Zumbe instructors during the event.

Sponsored by the Relay for Life team of "Bankers in Motion", event proceeds will go to the American Cancer Society (ACS).

Chairperson Sally Smith noted that she became involved in Zumba over a year ago and she loves it.

"Its great, it makes you feel good, you don't even know that you're exercising, and you just have fun while you're doing it."

Naomi Betancourt is a member of the Zumba Instructor Network (ZIN) and was a member of Ballet Hispanico and studied Flamenco, Modern, Jazz, Ballet, and Dance Oriental (Belly Dance) in New York City for over twenty years.

Naomi conducts Zumba classes at Memorial Hall in Jim Thorpe and in Palmerton, Lehighton, Weatherly, and Northampton Community College .

The two-hour long Zumbathon will be held on Sunday, March 4th from 1 to 3 p.m. at the skating rink in Memorial Hall on East 10th Street in Jim Thorpe with doors opening at 12:30 p.m.

In addition to two hours of Zumba, there will also be door prizes, raffles, 50/50, Zumbawear, and more.
