A Bethlehem man has been arrested by state police at the Lehighton barracks after he was caught with $24,900 worth of copper that was stolen from a Carbon County site.

Robert Thomas Fisher, 47, was charged with theft by unlawful taking after the incident at 4:07 p.m. Aug. 26, in Lower Towamensing Township.

Police said they were summoned to the area of the PPL Substation on Gap Road in the township to investigate suspicious activity. After making a traffic stop during the response, police found Fisher to be in possession of copper wire and several pieces of cut copper. It was then discovered a short time later that the substation had been broken into and the wire and copper pieces were removed from it.

Police said the items included 600 feet of wire and seven copper fuse fittings.
