Be careful what you wish for

Dear Editor:

Voters who are among the almost 50 percent of voters who pay no income tax particularly those who are resigned to remaining dependent upon government handouts, who do not feel threatened by the country's unsustainable debt and terrible economy, and are content with having "rich folks" pick up the tab, may be in for a rude awakening if they keep the current administration in power with their vote in the November elections. The Obama administration emphasizes the need for "millionaires and billionaires" to pay their fair share. But what is a "fair share?" The top 10 percent of taxpayers are already providing approximately 75 percent of federal income tax revenue. Are voters who do not share in the cost of government, but benefit from various services and "entitlements," paying their fair share?Unfortunately, many of these people are unable to pay any income tax. Perhaps their "fair share" is accepting lesser, more realistic "entitlements."There are of course many exceptions, but generally speaking, higher taxes result in reduced income for taxpayers, and this reduced income results in either or both reduced investment or reduced spending on goods. The ultimate result is the loss of jobs and fewer "rich folks" with less taxable income to finance the next bailout! No single block of voters in this country has, because of their large number, as much voting power as those not paying any income tax. If the current administration convinces these voters that their interests are best served by maintaining the status quo, and the opposition fails to convince them otherwise, our economy may never recover. Our very survival as a free nation may be at stake.Perhaps these voters are the key to keeping The United States of America from becoming one of the world's greatest civilizations whose average age from the beginning of history has been about two hundred years, who always progressed through the following stages, commonly attributed to Alexander Fraser Tytler, a Scottish-born British lawyer and writer of over 200 years ago.a. From bondage to spiritual faith;b. From spiritual faith to great courage;c. From courage to liberty;d. From liberty to abundance;e. From abundance to complacency;f. From complacency to apathy;g. From apathy to dependence;h. From dependence back to bondage!Tytler was one of many who believed that a true democracy could exist only until the majority discovers it can vote itself ever-increasing handouts out of the public treasury. After that, the majority always votes for candidates who promise the most benefits, resulting in an evaporating public treasury (sound familiar?!) and the democracy's collapse, followed by a dictatorship or monarchy.Be careful what you wish (vote) for! Thanks again.....Frank YanacekFYANACEK@tampabay.rr.com
