A Monroe County teen was charged with shooting a teenage girl in the head. The suspect was arrested following a manhunt on Thursday.

Pocono Mountain Regional police have charged Dominique Smith, 17, of Tobyhanna, with shooting the girl in what was described as a drug deal gone bad.

Smith was found in the woods not far from where the girl was shot.

The girl, who was not identified by police, is in the intensive care unit of the Lehigh Valley Hospital, Salisbury Township.

According to police the incident occurred about 2 a.m. along Pocono Heights Road near Little Billy Lane, in Coolbaugh Township.

Police said the victim and four other teens were in the area to meet someone to buy marijuana. Police said the first meeting didn't happen as planned, so a second meeting was arranged.

According to the police report, Smith allegedly exited a vehicle and fired a handgun into the vehicle in which the victim was riding. The bullet struck her in the head. Police said apparently the victim was not the target.

Smith then got back into his vehicle and fled the scene.

The vehicle with the victim was then driven toward the Wal-Mart store in Mount Pocono. Police were then called and found the car with the victim slumped over in the front seat. She was initially treated at the Pocono Medical Center, East Stroudsburg, before being transferred to LVH.

The four other teens in the car with the victim were all taken to the PMRP headquarters and questioned. They were later released. The teens gave police a description of the car Smith was in, which was spotted later, about noon, along Ryans Road near A Pocono Country Place, a residential community.

When police pulled the vehicle over, Smith, who was in the front passenger seat, fled on foot into nearby woods, which prompted a manhunt involving an estimated three dozen police officers from various area departments and the state police.

Smith was located about 3:30 p.m. in a wooded area near A Pocono Country Place welcome center.

During the search a state police helicopter, and search dogs were used.

Smith is charged as an adult with attempted criminal homicide, aggravated assault, and recklessly endangering another person. He is currently housed in the county prison in Snydersville.

Police also said a female juvenile who resides with Smith, will be charged with hindering apprehension, fleeing and eluding police, and escape.

Police further added that a male juvenile, who set up the drug deal, will also be charged.
