A Monroe County man is facing charges following an incident involving a stolen vehicle and a chase. State police at Fern Ridge said the incident began about 5:30 p.m. on Monday, July 30, in the area of 214 Birch Drive at Merwinsburg Drive, in Polk Township.

Troopers said a vehicle reported stolen earlier in Kunkletown, to state police at Lehighton, was observed at the above location. A traffic stop was initiated but the driver failed to stop and a pursuit ensued northbound on Merwinsburg Road, Effort.

The pursuit ended when the driver failed to negotiate curves and crashed into a tree. The driver then attempted to flee on foot but was caught and subdued with a tazer.

He was taken into custody and found to be under the influence of alcohol and admitted to stealing the car.

He was identified as Aaron Patrick Murphy, 25, of Effort. He was placed under arrest and charged with driving under the influence (DUI), and numerous traffic violations related the the pursuit. Troopers at the Lehighton barracks are filing charges concerning the vehicle theft.

Murphy was committed to the county prison in Snydersville pending arraignment.
