Palmerton Area School District has selected a Delaware County administrator to be its next junior high school principal.
The school board, on an 8-0 vote on Tuesday, agreed to appoint Paula Husar to the helm, effective June 18, 2012, at a salary of $76,000. Board President Barry Scherer was absent.
Husar will replace current junior high Principal Thaddeus Kosciolek, who will retire at the end of the school year after 35 years of service with the district.
A middle school principal for the past five years in the Chichester School District, Husar has 12 years of administrative experience.
Prior to her stint as middle school principal, Husar spent five years as assistant principal at Lower Merion High School. Before that, she served two years as assistant principal in the Pleasant Valley School District.
Husar, who resides in East Norriton Township, Montgomery County, expressed to the board her excitement over her new position.
"I am leaving my current district being very appreciative of the opportunity they gave me to serve as their middle school principal for five years," said Husar, 48. "And now I am looking forward to a new set of challenges and opportunities here."
Husar added "Palmerton is a wonderful, student-centered school district. And I believe that we are going to be a good fit for each other."
She said her current colleagues would describe her as "dedicated, and completely focused on students."
"I believe that the best way to describe myself is that I love what I do because of the students," Husar said. "And everything that I do is done with their best interests in mind."
Husar said she looked forward to "being a part of an incredible administrative team", and thanked everyone – in particular, Superintendent Carol Boyce and director of Human Resources Debra Demyanovich – for all of their assistance in the hiring process.
"I look forward to meeting and getting to know everyone," she said. "I am certain that the transition plan will be a good one, and I cannot wait to get started."
Demyanovich said 20 candidates applied for the position. Of those, six applicants were invited for a level one interview, which was then whittled down to the final three candidates for the level two interview process, she said.
