Stabbing death

A Montgomery County man has pleaded guilty to voluntary manslaughter in the beating and stabbing death of a man found on a Washington Township road last summer.

Robert Sloss of Pottstown was originally charged in Lehigh County with criminal homicide in the Aug. 20 death of 31-year-old Bryan Mayes of Slatington.Sloss, who was 26 at the time of his arrest, will be sentenced May 11.Mayes' body was found in the middle of Route 873 in Washington Township, and police said Sloss was found crouching over him. Authorities say they have no motive for the crime.His attorney earlier said his client had been attacked and was defending himself.Stephen Van Natten, Lehigh County's chief of prosecutions, described the killing as "strange, bizarre and still a bit of a mystery."
