A driver of a tractor trailer was taken to the hospital after overturning his truck and its load onto SR54 just before 11 a.m. yesterday in Barnesville, Rush Township.

The trailer, traveling east on Pine Creek Drive near the intersection of Fairview Street, spilled tons of raw coal all over the road and shoulder. A power and utility pole was also snapped.

The driver, Robert Bowers of Cressona, who suffered unknown injuries to his head, was taken via ambulance to St. Luke's Hospital - Miner's Campus. The road was closed for about four hours while police, firefighters and fire police detoured traffic around the accident.

Hope's Towing had to use special equipment to lift the rig. Also responding were firefighters and fire police from Rush Township, McAdoo, Quakake, Ryan Township, Delano and Mahanoy City.

A Rush Township officer, certified in DOT inspections, will be inspecting the rig today. Firefighters pointed out that four tractor trailers have flipped here in the past two years.

Township Sgt. Duane Frederick stated the incident is still under investigation.
