Pocono Mountain Regional police reported the arrest of a New York state resident on charges he started a fire at a Monroe County business, causing extensive damages. He used an old army rifle to cause the blaze, police said.
Police related that about midnight on Tuesday they responded to the corner of state routes 611 and 423 in Coolbaugh Township, for a fire at the gasoline pumps of Marek's Automotive Service Station.
Through the course of an investigation, police learned that John Alan Woods, 34, of Lindenhurst, had shot the gasoline pump from the second story apartment above the service station. Woods used a World War II era Russian military rifle with armour piercing ammunition, police said.
The round struck the pump which caused it to burst into flames and caused heavy damage. Woods fled the scene, tossing the rifle in the vicinity of the Coolbaugh Elementary School. Following an extensive search, police were able to find the rifle.
Woods has been charged with criminal mischief, as a felony three, recklessly endangering another person, disorderly conduct and public drunkenness.
He was lodged in the county prison in Snydersville pending arraignment, police said.
