The South Ward Neighborhood Committee met Oct. 20 in the community center at the South Ward Playground. The committee and the South Ward Playground Association agreed to team up on a Hallowen on the Hill celebration which will be held Oct. 29, from noon to 6 p.m. Rain date will be Oct. 30. Activities will include a costume/baby and pet parade scheduled to begin at 1 p.m., games and home made food.

The group discussed a variety of topics in addition to the Halloween celebration. Tamaqua Mayor Chris Morrison has announced Trick or Treat Night for the borough will be Oct. 31 from 6 to 8 p.m. The playground will be open, with treats for the ghouls and goblins, from 6-8 p.m.

Committee members are investigating the possibility of creating a community garden in the ward. Various sites and options were discussed, including turning a vacant lot on Orwigsburg Street into 10-12 garden plots. Some issues of concern included security, lighting, cost and the availability of volunteers.

Consultant Dan Schroeder will contact the construction company that built the community center concerning a few small issues that weren't addressed earlier. Schroeder also sought dates for a meeting with the plumber concerning winterization of the building.

Justin Startzel provided an update on events at the Willing Skate Park and the upcoming Christmas holidays. Startzel will begin decorating the playground for the Christmas season as soon as the playground closes for the Winter. The SWNC and SWPA will combine forced for a community Christmas event, complete with a visit from Santa.

A discussion was also held on a possible sinkhole problem on Mahanoy Street, the borough/police department camera project, the installation of "Children at Play" signs for the playground area and the need for additional volunteers.

The next meeting will be held Nov. 17, at 7 p.m., at the community center on Penn Street.
