Six area volunteer groups receive Parrot Head funds

The Black Diamond Parrot Head Club of Summit Hill always likes to give back to the community.

This year, the club chose six area volunteer organizations Lake Hauto Fire Company; Citizens Fire Company; South Ward Fire Company; Mahoning Valley Ambulance; Ryan Township Fire Company; and Hometown Fire Company as the recipients of the proceeds raised by its annual Margaritaville Open golf tournament, held this past August. Each company received a check for $500 to help cover costs for fuel, equipment and any other expenses."This is really a big help," said David Walls, fire chief of Lake Hauto Fire Company. "The way it is now with volunteers and with the economy, it's getting harder to raise money (to cover operating costs)."This is the fourth year the club has donated to local fire companies and other emergency organizations.Last year, they gave $500 to Nesquehoning Hose and New Columbus Fire Companies in Nesquehoning and American Hose Company and East End Fire Company in Tamaqua. Other recipients in the past include Lansford's American Fire Company No. 1, Coaldale Volunteer Fire Company No. 1 and Diligence Fire Company No. 1 in Summit Hill. The Black Diamond Parrot Head Club of Summit Hill is a non-profit organization that helps the community through fundraisers. It was chartered in 2003 and currently has 70 members who are interested in doing community service, while enjoying the music of Jimmy Buffett. The club is part of a larger network of groups located all over the world.Groups that the club have helped throughout the years include: The American Cancer Society, Carbon County Friends of Animals, Toys for Tots, The Penn State Dance Marathon, local fire departments, and Dream Come True. They have also sent packages to local soldiers stationed in Iraq and Afghanistan. For more information on the club, call Tom Tirpak at (570) 645-7850 or Stan Karnish at (570) 645-8651 or visit www.blackdiamond-phc.com.
