A Tamaqua man has been named new superintendent of schools for the Weatherly School District.
Thomas W. McLaughlin, who has been acting superintendent, was elevated to the top spot by the school board at a special meeting held last night. McLaughlin has been with the school district for the past six years. He began as an assistant principal and supervisor of special services. He was named high school principal in his second year at the school and served until August when he was named acting superintendent when Superintendent Frank Victor retired.
McLaughlin was one of several candidates for the position and was elected on a 5-3 vote. He was given a three year contract that pays $88,000 per year plus benefits.
The board said it will immediately begin a search for a principal to replace McLaughlin at the high school.
