Tamaqua's Poppy Queen

Tamaqua's 2011 Poppy Queen, McKayla McLaughlin, 9, hands the first poppy to Tamaqua Mayor and American Legion member Christian Morrison in front of the monument at C.H. Berry Post 173. McKayla, who is a junior member of the Tamaqua American Legion Ladies Auxiliary, is the daughter of Thomas and Andrea Bennage-McLaughlin and granddaughter of Norman and Ruth McLaughlin. Poppies are available for a donation through Memorial Day at the Legion home, as well as from various businesses and during monthly breakfasts. Poppies are also sold to remind people of upcoming events, such as the Memorial Day Parade, which will start an hour later this year, at 10 a.m. on Monday, May 30.
