Recycling Racoons are top 'Explorers'

The Recycling Racoons from L.B. Morris Elementary School in Jim Thorpe took the first place prize during the 2011 fourth and fifth grade (Explorers division) Envirothon, held at the Carbon County Environmental Education Center in Summit Hill on Tuesday. Members of the Recycling Racoons are standing on rock, from left, Jackie Condly; Alexa Romanchik; Emelyn Shirley, team captain; Jordan Waselus; and Heather Locke. With the team are, sitting on rock, Susan Gallagher, CCEEC chief naturalist; L.B. Morris teacher and team advisor Joann Donati; and standing, Lions Club District Governor Bob Kelsey. The Envirothon events are sponsored by area Lions clubs. Other teams that placed are: Poison Oaks of St. John Neumann, second; Green Thumbs of Tamaqua Elementary, third; and Penn Kidder Eagles of Penn Kidder Elementary School, honorable mention.
