A Monroe County woman was killed in a two vehicle crash on Thursday. State police at Fern Ridge said the crash occurred about 1:22 p.m. along SR115, just south of the Tunkhannock Township line, in Chestnuthill Township.

Troopers identified the victim as Theresa Ricciardi-Garcia, 29, of Effort.

Troopers said a 1998 Dodge Dakota was driven by Benjamin T. Farrell, 26, of Blakeslee, southbound when he began to pass another vehicle at a high rate of speed in a no passing zone.

Troopers said Garcia was northbound in the left hand lane at the time. Farrell attempted to steer back into the southbound lane but collided head-on into Garcia's 1993 Honda Civic.

Garcia was pronounced dead at the scene. Farrell was injured and taken to the Pocono Medical Center, East Stroudsburg, for treatment. Damages were termed major to both vehicles.

Troopers were assisted at the scene by Pocono Mountain Regional police, West End fire, ambulance and fire police, Tunkhannock Fire Company, and state police at Hazleton forensic unit.
