There was a whole lot of music going on at Pleasant Valley Elementary School. The banging of drums could be heard in one room and the sound of steel drums were heard in another. A visit to the cafeteria and fathers, mothers and boys and girls were having a grand time dancing.
Amy Boligitz, a PVE music teacher said that the Family Music Night was an opportunity "to bring families out to see what we do.""This is the first year we held Family Music Night. It was a chance for the community and families to experience what their children do in music class at PVE. We also wanted to advocate for our strong music program and give everyone a chance to make music on the instruments we received from two grants. We received a $2,000 grant from Target which we purchased steel drums. We also received a grant from the Pleasant Valley Education Foundation, which we used to purchase the African drums and rhythm instruments used at the event. On May 13 we had roughly 50 people attend the 3rd and 4th grade night. On June 3 we had roughly 90 people attend the K, 1, 2 night. For it being the first year, we were really pleased with the turn out, especially on two Friday evenings with beautiful weather," said Boligitz.
Jennifer Yorke of Saylorsburg said playing the djembe drums was a fun experience and Heather Kowalczyk of Effort said they played the drums and danced.
"We sang and banged. It was fun and we enjoyed it a lot."
Her son, Joseph, 6 said the drums were his favorite part.
All of the music teachers at PVE sold Smencils as a fundraiser to purchase new barred instruments such as xylophones, glockenspiels, and metallophones.
