Tamaqua wrestling champ arrested

Tamaqua state wrestling champion Garth Lakitsky, 18, was arrested for an incident in Ocean City, Md., recently, it was reported.

Lakitsky was arrested on June 7, charged with assault, resisting arrest and possession of alcohol by a minor.The incident occurred about 11:25 p.m. when an Ocean City police officer observed a male sitting on a park bench along the Boardwalk and holding an orange water bottle.The officer approached the male, later identified as Lakitsky. As he did Lakitsky, police said, attempted to hide the water bottle behind his back.The officer asked Lakitsky what he had in the bottle and was told that he had found the bottle and then handed it over to the officer. The officer smelled alcohol in the bottle and asked Lakitsky about the water bottle but he refused to speak.The officer then asked him his name, but Lakitsky gave a false name. He was told to stand up by the officer and turn around because he was going to be detained until his real name was learned.Lakitsky refused to turn around, police reports say, then he allegedly pushed the officer and fled. He was later located about four blocks away and taken into custody.A police spokesperson said that thousands of graduating high school seniors come to Ocean City for celebrations that go on during the month of June.Lakitsky went undefeated and became Tamaqua Area High School's first state champion in wrestling this past school year. He wrestled in the 215 pound class. He will play football next year at Lackawanna College, a two-year junior college located in Scranton.
