West Penn Township couple wed 50 years

Mr. and Mrs. Robert C. Beers, West Penn Township, celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary recently.

They were married on June 10, 1961, by the late Rev. Josiah Werner in Salem Evangelical United Brethren Church, Aquashicola.Mrs. Beers is the former Loretta Steigerwalt, daughter of the late Oscar and Verna Steigerwalt, West Penn Township.Prior to her retiring in 1986 she worked as a seamstress at many factories in Tamaqua and Lehighton for more than 30 years.Mrs. Beers is very active in her church, Zions Stone Church of West Penn Township, serving as a former Sunday school teacher and church treasurer and now with the kitchen committee and alter guild.Mr. Beers is the son of the late William and Mary Beers of Bowmanstown. Prior to his retiring in 1988 he served in the United States Army and worked for Bethlehem Steel as a millwright for more than 30 years.Mr. Beers is very active in his church too. He has served as a past property committee chairman and currently on the altar guild.They are the parents of two sons, Bruce, married to his wife Debbie of Smithfield, Va., and Keith, married to his wife Michele of West Penn Township.The couple has six grandchildren: Jennifer, wife of Gunnar Karason, Smithfield; and Heather Beers, also of Smithfield; and Jacob, Danika, Maxine and Lacey Beers, all of West Penn Township.They have one great-grandson, Erik Karason, of Smithfield.The happy couple was greeted at an anniversary celebration at the Mahoning Valley Ambulance Association, Lehighton, by many family and friends.
