Schuylkill crashes investigated

State police at Frackville reported on two crashes investigated by troopers over the past weekend on Schuylkill County roads.

A one-vehicle crash occurred at 2:05 a.m. on Friday along Fairview Street in Rush Township. Troopers said Dominic J. Caravella, 21, of Weatherly, was driving a 2008 Chevrolet Silverado pickup northbound when he swerved to avoid a deer on the road in front of him.

The truck went onto the west berm and struck a utility pole splitting the pole in half. Caravella was not injured but the truck had to be towed.

The second crash occurred at 9:32 a.m. on Saturday along Route 61 in New Castle Township. Troopers said Luis A. Cruz-Ortiz, 23, of Saint Clair, was driving a 1999 Oldsmobile Intrigue southbound when he attempted to pass another vehicle on the right side and lost control while negotiating a curve. The car went onto the west berm and hit loose gravel causing it to spin out. The car continued southbound and struck the guide rail on the east berm.

After impact with the guide rail, the car continued southbound and struck an embankment on the west side of the road. It came to final rest along the west berm facing south.

Cruz-Ortiz was not injured but the Oldsmobile had to be towed. Troopers cited Cruz-Ortiz for the crash.
