A Jim Thorpe man died Saturday when his motorcycle sideswiped one car and then struck another on the Mansion House Hill.
Joseph Jude Giglotti, 48, was driving a Harley-Davidson motorcycle north on Route 209, according to a report released by Mahoning Township Police Chief Kenneth J. Barnes. Giglotti originally was driving within the inside right lane of travel but for an unknown reason, he went into the outer lane and then partially veered into the south lane of travel.
Upon doing so, he made contact with or sideswiped a Chrysler PT Cruiser, driven by Robert C. Veltri, 26, of Buffalo, N.Y. Shaina Veltri, 25, also of Buffalo, was a passenger in the car.
This action caused Giglotti to lose control of his motorcycle.
He continued traveling north in the south lane and then collided head-on with a Nissan Murano driven by Alyssa Rex, 23, of the 500 block of West Washington St. Slatington. Judith Rex, 50, of the same address as Alyssa, was a passenger in the car.
The investigative report states that Giglotti made direct contact with the front bumper (head first) with the Rex vehicle, spun around while still on the motorcycle and the collided head first into cement curbing.
The accident happened at 12:10 p.m.
The Carbon County Coroner's office and Giglotti was pronounced deceased at the scene.
Township police were assisted at the scene by numerous agencies, including but not limited to Lehighton Ambulance, Lehighton Fire Department, Lehighton and Mahoning Township Fire Police, Jim Thorpe borough police and the state police.
The road was shut down for about 90 minutes. The investigation remains open at this time.
