Heather Slocum, 9, of Jim Thorpe was selected as the second grade winner for the PPL Bright Ideas Energy Efficiency poster contest. Slocum's entry was selected as a winner out of nearly 3,000 entries and was the only winning poster from Carbon County.

In the center of her poster, Slocum drew a globe with kids holding hands. "Save our planet together," she wrote on the poster. Surrounding the globe, she drew many pictures to show how to conserve energy.

"I wanted to draw a lot of pictures to give more information and examples," said Slocum.

She drew energy saving activities such as riding a bike instead of driving, planting a tree for shade and windmills generating clean electricity, among others.

Slocum used crayons and markers to draw many pictures to properly display her "bright idea."

She received a $200 savings bond and a congratulatory plaque. Her poster will also be displayed in a traveling art exhibit.

Slocum, who will be a third grade student at L. B. Morris Elementary in the fall, has also won art awards at school.
