Crash shuts down busy roadway

A three-vehicle crash shutdown a busy Schuylkill County roadway on Wednesday afternoon and was caused by road conditions. State police at Frackville said the crash occurred along SR209 at the intersection with Wood St., in the village of Cumbola, Blythe Township, at about 4:30 p.m.

Troopers said Katie Mertz, 30, of Tamaqua, and Eugene McCormick Jr., 51, of Middleport, were both traveling northbound toward New Philadelphia with Mertz behind McCormick. Michelle Drust, 44, of Coaldale, was southbound at the time headed toward Port Carbon.At the intersection with Wood St., Mertz lost control of her 2005 Chevrolet Trailblazer on the snow-covered road and crossed into the southbound lane and went onto the berm and hit a utility pole. Drust attempted to avoid hitting Mertz's vehicle as it crossed her lane of travel and subsequently struck the 2004 Dodge Dakota truck driven by McCormick with her 2004 Chrysler Pacifica.Mertz was injured and transported to the Schuylkill Medical Center-E. Norweigan St., Pottsville. No one else was reported injured.Troopers were assisted at the scene by volunteers from the New Philadelphia and Kaska fire companies.The road was closed in both directions for about an hour, troopers said.
