Vavra captures Big 10 swim title

Allysa Vavra of Indiana University captured the 200 yard Individual Medley at the Big Ten Women's Swimming and Diving Championships on Thursday.

Vavra, a Panther Valley High School graduate, swam a 1:57.01 in the finals to edge teammate Ashley Jones and in the process set a pool record at the Counsilman-Billingsley Aquatic Center on the campus of Indiana University. She became the first Hoosier to ever win the Big Ten 200 IM championship."It felt really good to win the event at home, especially with Ashley [Jones], because I really look up to her," Vavra was quoted as saying on the Big Ten website following the race. "Not only is she a really good training partner, she is one of my really good friends and for this to be one of her last races I am really proud to do it with her."Vavra, a junior, will be in the pool again today when she takes part in the 400 yard Individual Medley her best event.The Big Ten Championships will conclude Saturday.
