The holidays came early for children in the Pleasant Valley School District when a pair of nonprofit organizations joined forces to provide new coats for winter.

The West End Rotary Club donated 174 coats it purchased through another charitable group, Operation Warm, to encourage children to maintain school attendance throughout the coldest weather. Made from 100 percent recycled materials, the coats come in two styles and 12 colors.

Effort United Methodist Church distributed the coats to families on Dec. 10 at its supplemental food pantry. West End Rotary funded the project through its annual Oktoberfest and Car Show this fall.

"In these difficult economic times, families often need to concentrate their resources on critical essentials like food and rent," said Karin-Susan Breitlauch, president of West End Rotary. "Some children go through a winter with inadequate clothing, which could prohibit them from attending school."
