Although the current school year is only nearing its half way point the Schuylkill Intermediate Unit 29 School Board approved the school year calendar for 2012-13 for public schools at its monthly meeting held Monday evening at the Maple Avenue Campus in Norwegian Township.
Next year's school term will begin Monday, Aug. 27, 2012, and the last day for students will be Friday, May 31, 2013.
The holiday schedule adopted is as follows:
Labor Day, closed Monday, Sept. 3, reopen Tuesday, Sept. 4; Inservice Day for teachers only, Monday, Oct. 8, schools reopen Tuesday, Oct. 9; Thanksgiving Day Recess, Thursday, Friday and Monday, Nov. 22, 23 and 26, schools reopen Tuesday, Nov. 27; Christmas Holiday, Dec. 24 through Jan. 1, 2013. schools reopen, Wednesday, Jan. 2.
Also, Jan. 15, 90th day of school; Inservice Day for teachers only, Monday, Jan. 21, schools reopen Tuesday, Jan. 22; President's Day, Monday, Feb. 18, schools reopen Tuesday, Feb. 19; Good Friday, March 29; Easter Recess and snow makeup days, March 28, April 1, 2 and 3, schools reopen Thursday, April 4; Memorial Day, Monday, May 27, schools reopen Tuesday, May 28; Last Day of School for students, Friday, May 31; Inservice Day for teachers only and new IU first year teachers, June 3; and Inservice Day for new first year teachers, June 4.
Due to two flood related weather emergency days in September the Schuylkill Technology Center first semester will be adjusted to end Thursday, Jan. 19, with the second semester to begin Friday, Jan. 20.
The board voted to seat two new directors, John Erbe, of Mahanoy Area School District; and Gretchen Ulmer, Mineresville Area School District. Directors are still to be named from Blue Mountain and Shenandoah Valley school districts to be seated on the IU board, which is composed of 11 public school districts in Schuylkill County and one from Dauphin County to which students from the county attend.
Hired as part-time teacher aides to various local school districts were, Jessica Carl, Tremont, Pine Grove Elementary; Jacqueline Rose, Pottsville, to Maple Avenue Campus; Heather Bondura, Minersville, to Pine Grove Elementary; and Jessica Murphy, Orwigsburg, in the Early Intervention Program at the North IU Campus. All will be paid $8.25 per hour.
Alissa Hoffman, Ashland, hired as an educational interpreter at Saint Clair Area at $23,000 per school year.
The law firm of Lewis, Williams and Caravan, Schuylkill Haven, was re-hired as solicitor for the board at a fee of $6,000 for the period Jan. 1 through Dec. 31, 2012.
An agreement was entered with Orwigsburg Lions Club fo utilize the North Campus students and instructor for a community project of building of public tables. All costs paid by the Lions.
