Sorority news

The Alpha Theta Master chapter of Beta Sigma Phi Sorority held its last meeting at La Dolce Case Restaurant in Tamaqua. President Nancy Dreisbach conducted the business session.

Thank yous were received from Schuylkill Women in Crisis and Trinity Friends in Need. The chapter gave monetary donations to the two charitable organizations, as well as coats for SWIC. Sorority members agreed to help with the China Silk Road Dance performance on Dec. 16, at the Tamaqua Area Auditorium.

The next meeting will be held Dec. 7, at the home of Diane Agosti, and will include the annual Christmas party.

Holiday program

The Tamaqua Senior High School Music Department will present its annual Holiday Music Program on Dec. 8 in the Tamaqua Area Auditorium. The concert, which will begin at 7:30 p.m., will feature the best in holiday selections as presented by students in the Concert Choir, Jazz Chorale, Senior High Wind Ensemble and the "Raider" Concert Band.

Accompanists for the event will be Julian Gerace, Steven Moyer and Erin Raymond.

Bloodmobile

An American Red Cross Bloodmobile visited Tamaqua on Nov. 16, collecting 33 units of the "gift of life." The visit was sponsored by Momma's Little Secret Shop.

Local volunteers assisting Red Cross personnel were Jean Stevens, Claudette Zarra, Darlene and Bob Zeckman and Dolly and Bob Shirey. The Salvation Army gym was transformed into a blood collection center through the efforts of Randy Gormley, Jack Quinn, Mike Trubilla, Tom Rowland and Joe Rimm.

Multi gallon pins were awarded to: Hallie Gerber and Daniel Kabana, two gallons; Dennis Rosohac, four gallons; and Eugene Brode, 10 gallons.

Senior citizens

The Tamaqua Seniors met Dec. 1 at the Tamaqua Community Center with 87 members in attendance. President Jean Machamer conducted the business session and provided the invocation, entitled "He Keeps Me Going."

Secretary Joan Ann Garber and treasurer Doris Brobst provided their reports. Birthday celebrants with their special days in October and November were honored with cake and ice cream. Canned good and monetary donations were presented to the Tamaqua Salvation Army.

A total of 97 members registered for the annual Christmas party, which will be catered by Christy Joy.

Nancy Gerber was nominated for the position of vice president. Installation of officers will be held during the Dec. 15 meeting.

The group meets every Thursday, at 1 p.m., at the community center. Anyone 55 or older is welcome to join.

Every meeting is followed by social and pinochle games.

SS. Peter and Paul

The Holy Name Society of SS. Peter and Paul Catholic Church will meet this Thursday, at 8 p.m. The meeting will be preceded by a Mass, which will begin at 7:30 p.m.

Thursday, Dec. 8, is the Feast of the Immaculate Conception and is a holy day of obligation for Catholics around the world. Masses honoring the feast day will be held today at 7 p.m.; Thursday at 8 a.m. and 9 a.m.

Choir rehearsals are held Wednesdays: Children's Choir at 6 p.m.; Adult Choir at 7 p.m.

Volunteers will be needed on Dec. 12 to help decorate the church for the Christmas season. Decorating will begin at 6 p.m.

SW neighbors

The South Ward Neighborhood Committee will not have a regular meeting this month. Members will be assisting the South Ward Playground Association on Dec. 11, when Santa arrives to visit.

The next meeting will be held at 7 p.m., Jan. 19, in the community center on Penn Street.
