Carbon County will be the future site of a statewide conference for commissioners.

During the county commissioners' meeting on Thursday, Commissioner Wayne Nothstein announced that Split Rock Resort in Carbon County will be the site of the 2016 County Commissioners annual conference. The event, which runs from Saturday through Wednesday, is held annually in August.

Nothstein explained that at the end of the conference, the delegates vote on future site selections for the next five years.

He noted that Split Rock was not the recommended site for 2016, but an overwhelming vote by the delegates pushed the Carbon site to the top of the pack.

"It was a very big upset," Nothstein said, noting that it is not often that the delegates go against the recommendation of the committee. "This is something we can be very proud of."

He thanked Split Rock and Pocono Mountain Visitors Bureau for making a superb sales pitch during the conference; as well as Monroe, Wayne and Pike counties for their support to hold the conference in Carbon.

Annually, the conference hosts hundreds of county commissioners from across the state. They attend meetings and committee sessions to try and determine what needs to be done on the county levels statewide.
