N'western, Pleasant Vy. get soccer victories

Northwestern and Pleasant Valley both picked up boys soccer victories on Saturday.

BOYS SOCCERNorthwestern-PalmertonThe Tigers pulled off a 4-0 shutout victory over host Palmerton in a Colonial League game.Andrew Willis, Trevor Lear, Kyle Sorenson and James Hoover all recorded goals for the winners as they outshot Palmerton 13-7 in the game.NW goalies Talon Williams and Eric Laub teamed up to stop five shots.Palmerton goalie Nick Fiouris stopped 10 shots.Pocono Mt West-TamaquaPocono Mountain West handed Tamaqua a 3-0 non-league setback.J. Miller scored all three of the Panthers' goals.Tamaqua's Zack Lakitsky stopped eight shots in goal .In the JV game, PMW recorded a 3-1 win.Pleasant Vy.-StroudsburgPleasant Valley jumped out to an early lead and hung on to post a 2-1 Mountain Valley Conference victory over Stroudsburg.The Bears got first half goals from Ricky Forte and Malik Krcic to take a 2-0 lead. James Patterson assisted on Forte's goal while Krcic scored on a penalty kick.Steve Poorman got one back for the Mountaineers in the second half, but goalie AJ Werkheiser shut the door after that.Pleasant Valley finished with a 12-9 edge in shots and an 8-3 advantage in corners.Jim Thorpe-CatasauquaAfter the Rough Riders built a 3-0 lead at intermission, they continued to cruise in the second and posted a 5-1 non-league win over Jim Thorpe.Anas Mouahhid scored two goals for the winners.For the Olympians, Matt Rich scored to prevent a shutout.Matt Kaminski stopped 23 shots in the Olympians' goal.GIRLS SOCCERPine Grove-Jim ThorpeThe Lady Olympians breezed to a 7-0 victory over Pine Grove.Jim Thorpe, which outshot PG 24-13, was led by Caitlin Liscinski with two goals and two assists.Cat Condley also scored two goals for the Olympians. Chelsea Smelas and Kristin Lawrence both had a goal and an assist; Monica Eckley scored a goal; and Jen Rusbarsky chipped in an assist.DC Christian-TamaquaTamaqua had its offense in high gear as it rolled to a 7-4 non-league victory over Delaware County Christian.Lauren Mateyak, Kayla Hope and Kailee Rottet all scored two goals for the Raiders. Ali Updike had the other Tamaqua goal.Chey Bates stopped seven shots in the Raider goal.Tamaqua outshot DelCo Christian 28-14.FIELD HOCKEYLehighton in Falcon ClassicIn battle of 2009 PIAA State Champions, Lower Dauphin blanked Lehighton, 3-0, in the final of the Falcon Classic.Lehighton reached the title game by defeated Cumberland Valley, 3-2, in the semifinals.CROSS COUNTRYTamaqua at Carlisle InvitationalAmber Carroll turned in an outstanding performance to highlight Tamaqua's day at the Carlisle Invitational.Carroll had a great race and took first in the event with a time of 19:41.44, compiling an avarage mile time of 6:20.3. That performance, along with teammate Alexa Yoder's 37th place, helped the locals to an 11th place finish as a team.In the boys' race, the top finisher was Sam Kantnar, who came in 79th for Tamaqua, to help his team to a 37th place as a team.N'western at Foundation InvitationalTyler Stelmack finished in 17th place to lead the Northwestern boys at the Foundational Invitational at Hershey's Parkview Course.Stelmack's effort allowed the Tigers to finish 15th in the team standings. Tyler Malay (56th) and Ryan Cerrone (96th) also finished in the top 100 for Northwestern.In the girls meet, Emma Kemmerer had a 21st place finish to lead the Lady Tigers. Haley Yost (25th), Natalie Boehm (47th), Anna Fricchione (61st), and Alex Dutt (84th) rounded out the scoring for Northwestern, which finished fifth in the team standings.GIRLS TENNISJim Thorpe-PM EastJim Thorpe edged Pocono Mountain East, 4-3 in a non-league match.The Lady Olympians and PM East were deadlocked at 3-3, forcing a pro-set doubles match between each of the teams' numbers one and two players. In that match, Ellyn Tomko and Anna Domingo teamed up to take down Tirsa Delate and Bethany Dus, 8-7 (9-7 in the tiebreaker).Tomko and Domingo also won their respective singles matches in straight sets.Jim Thorpe 4, PM East 3SINGLESEllyn Tomko (JT) def.
