On Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 18 and 19, Lehigh Gap Nature Center is sponsoring a Migration Fest, a celebration of autumn migration season. Saturday's activities will take place at the nature center's new Osprey House visitor and education center. Sunday's events will be held at Bake Oven Knob.

Migration Fest will kick off with a bird walk, looking for migrating warblers and other birds. This event begins at the Osprey House at 7 a.m. and will last until approximately 9:30 a.m.

At 9:30 a.m. there will be a children's time at the Osprey House during which there will be a story about Monarch Butterflies and their migration and a craft related to Monarchs.

The Monarch theme continues with a migration workshop from 10 a.m.- noon. There will be a brief talk on the life history, migration, capturing, and tagging of Monarch Butterflies. This will be followed by a session during which the participants in the workshop will go out with nets and tags to capture and mark migrating Monarchs. They will also look for caterpillars and chrysalises of Monarchs and discuss other migrants that pass through Lehigh Gap.

People of all ages are welcome to attend the workshop and find some "Monarch magic."

On Sunday the annual HawkFest celebration of hawk migration will take place from 1-3:30 p.m, at the Bake Oven Knob parking lot. Live birds of prey will be exhibited by the Carbon County Environmental Education Center. Lehigh Gap Nature Center members will provide information about the restoration of the Blue Mountain at the Lehigh Gap Wildlife Refuge and will display local reptiles and amphibians. Hawk talks discussing hawk identification and migration will be given at the South Lookout on top of the mountain. From this location it should be possible to see a variety of hawks flying along the Kittatinny Ridge as they migrate.

All Migration Festival weekend activities are free to the public. Children and adults are welcome. The Osprey House is located at the Lehigh Gap Nature Center off Paint Mill Road in Washington Township north of Slatington.
