The Tamaqua girls soccer team captured the championship of the Hurricane Tournament to highlight the weekend's scholastic sports card.

In other action, Pleasant Valley, Weatherly and Lehighton picked up volleyball victories while Jim Thorpe breezed in tennis.GIRLS SOCCERTamaqua inHurricane TournamentTamaqua posted a perfect 3-0 rcord to capture the championship of the Hurricane Tournament.The Blue Raiders opened the tourney with a 5-1 win over host Schuylkill Haven, followed with a 3-1 victory over Tri-Valley, and then capped their perfect day with a 7-2 rout of Williams Valley.In their first game against Haven, the Lady Raiders' scored three first-half goals and went on to record the victory.Ali Updike scored two of her team's goals in that first half and also added a second half assist. Kailee Rottet also scored in the opening half while Lauren Mateyak added two second goals. Kayla Hope also aided in the team's success by contributing two assists.Against Tri-Valley, Mateyak's talied twice for the Raiders while Ali Updike contributed the go-ahead score in the first half. Chey Bates was impressive in goal with four saves on the day.Mateyak came up big in the day's final game against Williams Valley, scoring a hat trick. Teammates Hope, Updike, Rottet and Kaleigh Rabenold rounded out the Raiders' scoring.FIELD HOCKEYLehighton-Penn ManorPowerhouse Penn Manor scored all of its goals on set pieces to defeat Lehighton, 4-2, in the Indians' non-league season opener.Renee Suter scored all four goals for Penn Manor, which has played in the last two Class AAA state championship games. Suter scored on three short corners and one penalty stroke.Trailing 2-0 at halftime, Lehighton answered back with a goal by Haley Coleman of an assist from Steph Slaw.But Penn Manor got a couple more goals from Suter to pull away before a late stroke by the Indians'Jordyn Homyak closed out the scoing.BOYS SOCCERSchuylkill Vy.-TamaquaThe Blue Raiders suffered a setback at the hands of visiting Schuylkill Valley, 3-1.After facing a 2-0 deficit at the break, the locals cut the lead in half, before eventually falling to SV.Guliano Caliero led the winners with a goal and an assist in the win.Cody Estremera scored the sole goal for Tamaqua off an Eric Bachert assist.Zack Lakitsky stopped seven shots in goal for the Raiders.GIRLS VOLLEYBALLJim Thorpe-LehightonThe Lady Indians got out to a great start and never looked back as they took the straight-game win over Jim Thorpe, 25-10, 25-9, 25-13.The Lobein girls led the way for the Indians as Debra had eight assists, two aces and two kills while Jessica had 12 digs and four kills.Lauren McCullion led the assists category with 14 for the Indians. Laureen DiMattia had five aces, two kills and two digs and Lauren Poremba contributed six digs, five aces and three kills.Pleasant Vy.-NorthamptonThe Lady Bears were victorious for the second time this season, as they defeated Northampton in a tough, five-game match, 25-21, 25-13, 22-25, 19-25, 15-12.The well-rounded Bears' effort had contributions from the entire team. Kayla Dorney led the way with 11 kills, 18 digs, three blocks and two aces. Brittni Cumberland had 24 assists and three kills; Mackenzie Dorney added 11 digs and four kills; Breanna Joseph had eight blocks and three kills; and Crystal Cambria added seven kills.Weatherly-Panther Vy.Weatherly rallied for a 22-25, 26-24, 17-25, 25-11, 15-7 non-league victory over Panther Valley.The Wreckers improved to 2-0 on the season.Brittany Hinkle had 18 kills, 17 digs and three aces for the winners while Rachel Heister added 48 assists, 10 digs and three aces. Weatherly also received 20 digs, 15 kills and seven assists from Sarah Dolinsky. Also contributing to the victory were Alyssa Kephart (17 kills, 12 digs), Samantha Strizak (18 digs) and Alicia Panzarella (16 digs).For the Panthers (0-1), Chrissy Micholik had 14 kills and five service points; Celene Yelito had 19 service points four aces; and Lydsay Kusko added eight service points.GIRLS TENNISTamaqua-Jim ThorpeJim Thorpe swept the singles matches against Tamaqua and went on to post a 4-1 victory.Ellyn Tomko, Anna Domingo and Marissa Farra all earned their team points with wins in singles.For Tamaqua, Deana DeWire and Laine Confer were the sole winners on the afternoon with a 7-5, 6-3 win at number two doubles.Jim Thorpe 4, Tamaqua 1SINGLESEllyn Tomko (JT) d.
