John J. Yurick, of East Mauch Chunk, received a citation for extraordinary heroism in action while aboard the S. S. Flaherty in the battle of the Atlantic. The citation was in regards for heroic actions against a German submarine during the capture of that vessel off French Africa on June 4, 1944. Yurick's group on the ship accomplished the first successful boarding and capture of an "enemy man of war" on the high seas by the U.S. Navy since 1815, the citation stated.
