Students at Tamaqua Elementary and St. Jerome Regional schools recently learned some life-saving lessons as the Tamaqua Fire Department conducted its Fire Safety Program.

In one of the emergency scenario, the students learned what it was like to escape in a smoke-filled room by crawling blindfolded out of bed and to the nearest window.

In another demonstration, students were taught to dial 911 and explain their emergency situations to 911 operators. Volunteer firefighters Aaron Dotson and Keith Oliphant, who were both hidden in the elementary school's gym storage room, acted as 911dispatchers during the demonstration.

St. Jerome students were also given the chance to see and learn about fire trucks, which were all staged in the parking lot of the school.
