A Union County contractor, who bilked a New York state couple out of more than $100,000 for a new home construction, was sentenced to a county prison term on Monday in Carbon County court.

William D. Wehr, 66, of Lewisburg, was sentenced by President Judge Roger N. Nanovic II to serve six to 23 months in prison and to make restitution to the victims of $105,800. The prison term will be followed by four years of probation.State police at Fern Ridge charged Wehr with taking the money from Iriana Lyakhuvitskiy, of Key Gardens, and her husband, for the construction of a modular home on a site in the Indian Mountain Lakes development in Penn Forest Township. The transaction occurred in or around Oct. 20, 2007.Wehr did some work on the site but never constructed the home.Wehr told Nanovic he had no intention of taking the money without doing the work, but said he found himself in a situation that he used the money to complete other projects.He told the court, "I have great remorse for what happened." He told Nanovic he is currently involved in a construction project in which he will receive payment of $32,500 sometime within the next 10 weeks and promised to turn the entire amount over to the victims. Nanovic said he would make it part of the sentence that the money be turned over to the victims.Wehr also claimed he had other proposed projects he was working on and asked to delay the start of the sentence for 15 days so he could try and secure the work. Nanovic said he would, but that any payments he receives from new work must be turned over to the victims. Nanovic said the adult probation office and the bureau of collections must be informed of all business transactions.Assistant District Attorney Joseph Matika asked the court that if Wehr requests to be furloughed from jail for a work project or gets work release privileges, that his office and/or the probation office be informed so the victims are aware of the it.In addition to the jail time and restitution, Nanovic also ordered Wehr to supply a DNA sample and pay the $250 fee since the charge that he pleaded to, theft by required disposition of funds, was a felony three. He must also pay court costs, a $50 per month supervision fee during the entire length of the sentence and render three hours of community service per month while on parole and probation.He begins the jail term on Dec. 15 at noon.
