Area woman celebrates 100 years

Emma (Smith) Brown, a resident of the Mahoning Valley Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, celebrated her 100th birthday on Tuesday, with a party attended by family and friends.

Brown was born Nov. 16, 1910 in Little Gap and grew up in Stroh's Valley. She attended school in one-room school houses.She was married to Allen Samuel Brown, raising three stepchildren and a son, David.Along with being a homemaker, she helped on the family farm and also was housekeeper for several clients. She also worked in a dress factory for 2 1/2 years.Described as feisty by family, Emma is loved by her granddaughter, Rachel Connor of Nesquehoning, who was at her 100th celebration."I loved spending time with my grandmother for a few days each summer on the farm," said Connor.Brown was 28 years old when she married her husband and they were together until his passing.She was one of six girls in her family and she and her brother, Floyd of Forest Inn, are the last survivors of her immediate family. Floyd was also at her celebration.Brown was feted with balloons, a corsage and cake at the nursing home in observance of her birthday.
