Adam Wehr was not sure about giving the high school part of the Triple-A All-Star Home Run Derby a shot.

After some thought, the Northwestern senior made the decision to participate in the event this past Sunday at Coca Cola Park after the IronPigs played. The other 20 participants wished he would have stayed home as Wehr blasted his way to the next round of the competition by posting the highest total of the day with 20 points.

Sponsored by Lehigh Valley Health Network, the derby will be held on Monday, July 12 at Coca Cola Park during the Pigapalooza festivities surrounding the Triple-A All-Star game on July 14.

The competition provided three ways for contestants to score. A line placed 40-feet in front of the wall marked the 1-point range. A shot to the warning track earned three points and over the wall rung up five.

Quakertown slugger Jayson Rathjens came the closest to reaching Wehr in scoring 16 points but not another contestant hit double figures.

Rounding out the top eight were Whitehall's Carlos Urena, Northampton's Josh Fehnel, Bethlehem Catholic's Patrick Washe, Phillipsburg's Robert Howell, Nazareth's DJ King and Bangor's Westyn Baylor. They all moved on to the next round of competition on Saturday June 6, following the afternoon contest between the IronPigs and the Charlotte Knights.

Of those eight, only two will advance to participate in the Homerun Derby that will also include six players from Triple-A teams from the International League and Pacific Coast League.
