Here are a few facts about the soon-to-be new owners of Weatherwood, the Carbon County Nursing Home and Rehabilitation Center.Guardian Elder Care's headquarters is located in Brockway, a small town located eight miles north of Dubois, in western Pennsylvania.The company began in 1995, after the late Frank Varischetti, a community-oriented businessman, believed that he could begin a venture to help care for the elderly.He began the operation with Raymond Calhoun, who is now chairman of the board of the business. Varischetti's son, Peter, now operates the business.Since its inception, the company has grown in numbers and currently operates 23 nursing facilities, including Guardian Elder Care Center in Nanticoke; as well as a long-term care pharmacy, a rehabilitation services company and a home-health care company.About theVarischettisAccording to an article posted on the Pittsburgh Steelers' Web site on Feb. 20, the Varischetti family is well-known in western Pennsylvania as a family dedicated to community involvement and has completed numerous projects through the Frank Varischetti Foundation.Besides Guardian Elder Care, the Varischettis own and operate Varischetti & Sons Inc., a commercial real estate in Pennsylvania and New York that provides consultation services to the waste industry; Phoenix Sintered Metals Inc., a manufacturer of powder metal parts serving many different industries, including outdoor power equipment, sporting goods, hydraulic/fluid power, automotive, recreational vehicles, food service and medical; and Apple Tractor Inc., a supplier of machinery for the construction and mining industries, as well as selling, renting and buying new and used construction equipment.They also have strong ties with the Pittsburgh Steelers, becoming part co-owners of the team in 2009.
