In an attempt to bridge the cultural gap in the Pleasant Valley School District, it has held a "Night of Unity, A Celebration of Diversity" for the last nine years. Various local organizations had displays to educate the community to what is available to them from Scouting, to service organizations, cultural displays and samples of ethnic foods. This year there were 13 performances ranging from Irish stepdancing, sign language presentation, music by bag pipes, Native American dancing to hip hop and slam poetry. Left to right, Carl Watts and Blair Thomas from East Stroudsburg South (ESS), Vanessa Bell of Pleasant Valley, and Ryan Bernard and KJ Wilson from ESS, demonstrated the art of Slam Poetry. They are all members of Urban Mountain Voices of Pocono Community Theater (urbanmountainvoices.org.) The first NEPA Poetry Slamfest will be held on Friday, April 30 at the Pocono Community Theater, 88 South Courtland St., East Stroudsburg.
