The Pleasant Valley School District board of directors voted to approve the 2010-11 General Fund Budget with an 8-1 vote at the June 24 meeting. Director James Spinola voted against it.
The new budget will increase by 7.790 mills for a total of 143.290 mills in property tax and the Act 511 Earned Income Tax of 1 percent and the Real Estate Transfer Tax of 1 percent.
If you have a home assessed at a market value of $100,000 with an assessed value of $25,000, your tax bill will be $3,582.25. That millage is down from the proposed General Fund Budget figure, 8.13 mills, given at the May 13 meeting.
The district has no plans to hire any new positions in 2010-11 and there will be an elimination of 19 positions.
Funding sources for the 2010-11 budget are: Local funding - 57.1 percent; State funding - 38.8 percent; Federal funding - 1.4 percent; and use of $2.51 million fund balance - 2.7 percent.
The almost six percent increase would be from 135.500 to 143.290 mills. The district's 2010-11 net collected mill value is second lowest in Colonial IU 20 with the highest value being Bethlehem at $2,673,963 and the lowest being Pen Argyl at $294,320. PV is the lowest in Monroe County at $304,724. Pocono Mountain is the highest at $897,310.

*Approved of the alteration/curtailment of the K-4 Elementary Art Program, due to declining enrollment, effective the 2010-11 school year
*Approved of the alteration/curtailment of the Middle School grades 8-9 Spanish/World Language Program due to declining enrollment to be effective the 2010-11 school year.
"We're not doing away with the program, we're eliminating a position," said Dr. Arnold.
Dr. Douglas Arnold, PVSD superintendent, said he will be sending "Thank you" notes to Weis Markets of Brodheadsville and Dale's Concessions for their donations of food and entertainment for the students and staff of Eldred Elementary School end of the school year event.
He also noted that he has received several "thank you's" from parents for the great work teachers have done with their children.
*Mr. Robert Hines, principal of the Pleasant Valley Cyber Academy reported that 13 students have returned their computers because they will be returning to the brick and mortar school in the fall.
*Director Murphy voted "no" to approve contracts in Famularo's business management report.
*The board approved the 2010 Homestead and Farmstead Exclusion Resolution with the maximum homestead and farmstead assessment exclusions of $3,145, each. The maximum homestead and farmstead tax exclusions are $450.65, each.

The board approved, as per the Act 93 and Central Office Administrative Agreements, salaries of administrators, including merit awards, for the 2010-11 school year and for commissioned officers to teach college level courses and/or provide consulting services.

The board approved an affiliation agreement between Alvernia University and Pleasant Valley, effective June 15, 2010 for a period not to exceed five years for Field, Student Teaching, Professional Development School, interns and student observers.
A Letter of Agreement between Carbon, Monroe, Pike Drug and Alcohol Commission, Inc. and Pleasant Valley was approved for drug and alcohol prevention/intervention services for the 2010-11 school year at the cost of $17,500, to be funded from the Safe and Drug Free Schools Grant
Elementary parent volunteers for 2010-11 are: Madelon Lunn, Chestnuthill; Colleen Baker and Michele Mann, Polk.
Girls' basketball assistant coach is Greg Duff.
Named for 2010-11 co-curricular/non-athletic adviser positions: JoElle Palmer, PVHS assistant stage manager; Danielle Unger, Key Club adviser; Lois Mann, Music Honor Society and Show Choir.
2010-11 Marching Band positions are: Aaron Boligitz, assistant director; Amy Boligitz, Tyler Hutta, Steven DiVirgilio, Lauren Hoffman assistants; Holly DeVivo, equipment manager.
In the business management report for Pleasant Valley School District, the school board voted and approved the following bid award for refurbishing of tennis courts to Nickolaus Construction for $21,400.
Dr. Arnold thanked Linda Micklos for serving as the board's treasurer for the last two years.
Board president, Susan Kresge and several board members noted that graduation was exceptional this year.
