Elk Lightning upset FT Pats

Entering their baseball game against the powerful Franklin Township Patriots, Lansford Elk Lighting Head Coach Bob Pavlik knew that in order to pull out a win, his squad would require a full team effort.

After the contest ended, Pavlik was pleased with the result.Lasford received offense from all its starters to pull out a 21-13 win over the Patriots to improve to 8-7, but more importantly, receive the springboard boost heading into this weekend's playoffs."Offensively, players one through nine all stepped up and brought the hits tonight," Pavlik said. "Every starter drove in at least one run and that's exactly what we needed - a total team effort - in order to beat a great team like this."Franklin Township, which entered the game with a 13-1 record, stormed out to a 7-1 lead after two frames. Lansford pitcher Mark Williams calmed down, though, limiting his opposition's offense to six runs the rest of the way."Mark really settled down after the first three innings and went the distance," Pavlik said. "I mean, our offense really stepped up at that point, and we ended up outscoring (Franklin Township) 18-4 over the last four innings."Trailing 9-3 after three, Lansford erupted for six runs in the top of the fourth to tie things up. After Williams relinquished nothing in the bottom of the fourth, Elk Lighting took the lead with a top of the fifth run.The Pats scored two more in the bottom of the fifth to change the lead again. The "dormant volcano" that proved to be Elk Lighting then exploded again for six more runs in the top of the sixth to take back the lead. That proved to be all that the winners would need to pull out the 'w.'"We've really been waiting for this type of performance from our guys all year," Pavlik said. "This was our last game before the playoffs so this could really help us out with our team confidence heading into those playoffs."Franklin Township scored 13 runs but its defense commited six costly errors. The Patriots' Vince Mele and James Farano each had three hits in the game while Jason McEvoy added two.Elk Lighting pounded out 19 hits while committing only two errors.Eric Swankowski led the winners with three hits, while Mark Williams, Paul Mika and Lukas Damian all contributed two.Elk Lighting 102 616 5 - 21 19 2FT Patriots 432 020 2 - 13 12 6Williams and Damian; Rossino, Wenrich (4), McEvoy (7) and Wenrich, Farano (4).
