Independence Day will be special in Lehighton this year.

The first Lehighton Independence Day celebration will be held on July 3 and 4.

Most of the events are Sunday, July 4, including fireworks and an "Amazing Lehighton Race."

Opal Snyder, president of the Lehighton Downtown Improvement Committee, said volunteers are needed. Perspective volunteers can contact Snyder at [1].

She said weekly meetings are held each Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. at Baer Memorial Park.

Events on July 3 include contests at Baer Memorial Pool throughout the day, a cruise by the Jukebox Cruisers, a motorcycle poker run. At 7 p.m., there will be a concert by the Lehighton Band in the Park Amphitheater.

On July 4, there will be a community parade leaving from the Lehighton Municipal Building at 1 p.m. and proceeding to Baer Memorial Park.

The grand marshal will be Major General Jay Barry.

Snyder said a band is being formed by Lehighton musicians.

"Anyone in the community who plays an instrument can participate," she said.

Also on this date, an Amazing Lehighton Race, which is similar to the network TV show "Amazing Race," will be staged.

Todd Zimmerman, chairman, said the race will be based on both speed and mental abilities.

More information can be obtained by contacting Zimmerman at [2].

A concert will be staged at Baer Memorial by Donna Parsons of Palmerton starting at 7:15 p.m. Fireworks will be fired at 10 p.m.

Snyder said the festival was formed to help the community.

"We need something here," she said. "Jim Thorpe has revitalized. We'll never have the heavy tourism like Jim Thorpe has."
