Lehighton Area School District honored 62 of the top academic students at the high school recently at the 24th annual Top 10 Percent Academic Awards Banquet held at Franklin Township Fire Company.

Recognized were 23 students in the class of 2010; 17 students who will graduate in 2011; and 22 students in the freshman class.

Welcoming parents and students to the event was Timothy Tkach, high school principal. Tkach said that he was thrilled and honored to recognize the students who strived to succeed academically at the high school level.

Honored in the class of 2010 were Olivia Anderson, Darrin Arndt, Sarah Bednar, Jonathan Behler, Aubrey Bourgault, Alicia Edsall, Jennifer Everett, Molly Harleman, Tiffany Harleman, Corey Haupt, Rachel Inghram, Elizabeth James, Lauren Jankowski, Dacin Kemmerer, Alex Matika, Brendan McCullian, Kara Melber, Jordyn Miller, Timothy Sulzer, Erica Wenrich, Sheena White, Amanda Windbeck and Madeline Zurn.

Recognized in the class of 2011 were Jason Addy, Echo Bretz, Chey Davis, Laureen DiMatttia, Tyler Hill, Rebecca Hoffner, Jordyn Homyak, Nikole Horn, Marcus Kunkle, Lauren McCullion, Sarah Nanovic, Jacob Plocinik, Shad Steigerwalt, Kenzie Teno, Noah Tkach and Kirk Arner, who was named top student in the class in 2008 2009 and 2010 and Samantha Cerimele, was second highest student academically.

Freshmen class honorees were Jordan Burbage, Isabelle Chew, Zachary Coleman, Katie Eidem, Evalina Heckman, Jayden Hensley, Stacey Kerschner, Shyanne Kleintop, Carter McCandless. Nicole Myrtle, Peter Petrack, Adam Reichard, Caitlin Roth, Sydney Schafer, Kara Serfass, Graham Strauss, Jonathan Strauss, James Sverchek, Michael Warkala, Justin Ziegenfus. Nicholas Mantz is the top student and Laura Cressley is listed as number two in class ranking.

Superintendent James Kraky recognized the parents of the students and thanked them for supporting their student and the school district.

"Without the parents providing the support, our students could not be as successful," said Kraky.
