Lehighton AMVETS, Elwood Miller Post 106, Lehighton, presented awards to winners the Americanism contests. Prizes were awarded to third grade winners of the poster contest and to seventh grade winners of the essay contest. The theme of the essay contest was, "Why Do We Celebrate the Fourth of July?"

Winners of the seventh grade essay contest were: Katelin Hosler, Ss. Peter and Paul School, who was awarded first place and $50; second place was Sierra Volkert, $30, also of Ss. Peter and Paul School; and Devin Hinkle, third place, $20, and a student at the Lehighton Area Middle School.

Winners of the poster contest were, Elizabeth Eckart, first, $50; and Chris Whiteman, second, $30, both of Mahoning Elementary School; and Austin Miller, third, $20, a student at Ss. Peter and Paul School.

In Hosler's essay, she noted that, "Independence was a gradual and painful process that began in the middle 1700s when the 13 colonies that make up part of England's empire were finding it difficult to be ruled by a kind 3,000 miles across the Atlantic Ocean.

She noted that the Boston Tea Party and Boston Massacre were two events that hurried destiny. She concluded with, "Every July 4, Americans have a holiday from work and celebrate. At dusk, people gather to watch the fireworks display. Wherever Americans are around the globe, they will get together for a traditional Fourth of July celebration."
