A Bethlehem man who told police he was asleep at the wheel was injured Thursday morning when his van hit an embankment on Route 443 in Mahoning Township and rolled over several times.
Sean Doughtery, 22, of the 5400 block of Hanoverville Road, will be cited for careless driving and failing to wear a seat belt, said township Police Chief Kenneth Barnes.
The crash happened at 7:07 a.m. A witness told police she was behind the Ford van from the area of the Wal-Mart construction site until it crashed. The witness said the van was drifting over the white fog line many times and about three or four times over the yellow line. The witness stated that the van was doing over 60 mph at times. The van hit the embankment right in front of the Tractor Supply store and went nose up first, rolled over about three or four times and then landed on its driver's side and came to rest in the westbound lane face north on all four wheels, Barnes said.
Doughtery told police the van belongs to his employer. He told the investigating officer that he fell asleep while driving. Doughtery was injured in the accident and transported by Lehighton ambulance to the Lehigh Valley Medical Center, Salisbury Township.
