A tire fire that filled the sky with black smoke Monday evening and had numerous fire companies from three counties responding, has been ruled an arson by a state police fire marshal.
The fire broke out at the Hazle Auto Parts property in Hazle Township just outside Hazleton about 7 p.m. It was not brought under control until about 10 p.m.
About 100 firefighters fought the blaze from Luzerne, Carbon and Schuylkill counties. The fire marshal ruled the tires were deliberately set on fire. A photo and story on the fire appeared on page one of Tuesday's TIMES NEWS.
